Brucato wins twice during double-stop weekend on Western New York Tour

Running two separate events on a single weekend is hard enough, but Nick Brucato, who heads up the Western New York Tour traveled from two locations about an hour and half apart on Saturday and Sunday, January 26 & 27, and not only ran separate events, but won them, as well. On Saturday, at Outback Billiards in Elmira, NY, he conducted what he called a "six-man challenge," and won three matches to go undefeated. On Sunday, at Camelot Billiards in Rochester, the entrant number doubled, and Brucato was challenged in the finals by Ed Torres, who defeated him in the first set of a true double elimination final. Brucato came back to win the second set and chalk up his second event victory in two days.

At Saturday's six-man challenge, Brucato picked up an opening round bye, which put him among the final four winners, where he defeated Sean Meyer 7-3. He moved on to the hot seat match with Kevin Zuniga, who'd defeated Brett Fenstermacker 5-3. Brucato then shut Zuniga out 7-0.

Fenstermacker moved west to meet up with Joe Pantalunas (originally defeated by Meyer), while Meyer picked upMike Nichols (originally defeated by Zuniga). Pantalunas and Meyer prevailed, both by 5-3 scores, to meet each other in the quarterfinals. Fenstermacker survived a double hill match in those quarterfinals, only to have his day ended in a double hill semifinal against Zuniga. Brucato completed his short, undefeated run with a 7-2 victory over Zuniga in the finals.

On Sunday, Brucato was once again among the winners' side final four, facing Ed Torres this time. Sean Ven and Lewis Riccio squared off in the other winners' side semifinal. Brucato gave up only a single rack against Torres, as Riccio was busy sending Ven west 5-3. Brucato took the hot seat match 7-2.

Torres moved west to pick up Don Purdy, who'd gotten by Brian Cam 4-3 and Phil Johnson 5-3. Ven drew Jose Mirabelle, who'd defeated Terry Buhlman and Jack Pribe, both 6-4. Torres moved on with a double hill win over Purdy, as Mirabelle handed Ven his second straight loss 6-4. Torres then downed Mirabelle 6-3 in the quarterfinals, and got a second shot versus Brucato with a 5-2 win over Riccio in the semifinals.

Torres took the opening set of the true double elimination final 7-3. Brucato tightened things up and gave up only a single rack in the second set to complete a second straight event victory on his own tour.

Inness survives loss-side challenge from Brucato to take Western New York Tour stop

On December 22, at a stop on the Western New York Tour, hosted by Outback Billiards in Elmira, NY, Angelo Inness played and won four matches to get into the hot seat. Tour director Nick Brucato played six, winning five on the loss side to challenge him in the finals. Brucato took the opening set of the double elimination final, but Inness came back to win the second and claim the event title.

Brucato was moved west in the opening round of play by Lanny Phillips (7-2), who moved on to face Dennis Cote among the winners' side final four. Inness, in the meantime, squared off against Shawn Myer (co-owner of Outback Billiards). Inness downed Myer 7-4, and in the battle for the hot seat, faced Cote, who'd sent Phillips west 6-4. Inness gave up only a single rack in the match against Cote, and sat in the hot seat, waiting on Brucato.

Brucato's path back to the finals began with a 7-3 win over Kyle Bova, who had won three of the tour's last four stops. Brucato moved on to defeat Joe Catalina and pick up Myer, coming over from the winners' side semifinals. Phillips drew Mike Wishwanick, who'd downed Brett S. 6-3 and Jesse Norton 6-4. Also eliminated in the matches deciding the tie for ninth place was Shawn Myers' father, Chuck, the other co-owner of Outback Billiards.

A quarterfinal re-match between Brucato and Phillips was arranged, once Brucato had eliminated the younger Myer 7-1, and Phillips had survived a double hill battle against Wishwanick. Brucato, who'd given up only seven racks over his last three matches, made it eight racks over his last four with a 7-1 victory that put him into the semifinals against Cote.

Brucato gave up two racks in a 7-2 win over Cote that gave him a shot against Inness in the finals. Brucato made it a loss of only nine racks in five games with a 7-1 victory in the opening set of those finals. Inness, though, turned the tables on him, giving up only a single rack in the second set to claim the event title.

The next stop on the Western New York Tour is scheduled for January 19 at Camelot Billiards in Rochester, NY.

Bova double dips Jackson to take Western New York Tour stop

Kyle Bova took two out of three against Roger Jackson to knock him out of the hot seat and claim the event title of the December 15 stop on the Western New York Tour. The event drew 22 entrants to Camelot Billiards in Rochester, NY.

From among the winners' side final four, Bova took out Jerry Sullivan 7-4, as Jackson sent Mike Nichols west 6-4. In their first of three, Jackson dominated, winning 7-3 to sit in the hot seat.

Sullivan moved to the loss side and picked up Mark Creamer, who'd defeated Lanny Phillips 6-4 and Don Purdy 5-3. Nichols drew Jerry Crow, who'd eliminated Andre Ianello 7-4 and survived a double hill battle againstDave Grau. Creamer then downed Sullivan 5-3, and in the quarterfinals, faced Nichols, who'd ended Crow's day 7-5.

Creamer got the best of Nichols in the quarterfinals, defeating him 6-4 for a shot at Bova. Bova, though, had other ideas. He ended Creamer's loss-side streak with a 7-3 victory and turned his attention on to a double elimination final versus Jackson.

Bova won exactly twice as many games as Jackson over the two-set final. He took the opener 7-4, and the second set 7-3 to capture the event title.

The next stop on the Western New York is scheduled for Saturday, December 22, at Outback Billiards in Elmira, NY.

Bova double dips Mirabelle to take King of the Bar Box tourney in Rochester, NY

Kyle Bova, 17, was crowned King of the Bar Box at a November 17 stop on the Western New York Tour, taking two out of three matches he played against Jose Mirabelle. The event drew 20 entrants to Camelot Billiards in Rochester, NY.

From among the winners' side final four, Bova hooked up with Tito Ortiz, as Mirabelle took on tour director Nick Brucato. Bova got into the hot seat match with a 7-4 victory over Ortiz, and faced Mirabelle, who'd sent Brucato west 7-5. In a double hill battle, Mirabelle took the first of three against Bova, and sat in the hot seat, awaiting his return.

Brucato moved to the loss side and faced Rick Sicotti, who'd defeated Don Purdy 4-2 and Louis Riccio 5-3 to reach him. Ortiz picked up Roger Jackson, who'd gotten by Jerry Sullivan 4-3 and Bruce Prince 4-2. Sicotti and Jackson advanced to the quarterfinal money round; Sicotti with a 7-4 victory over Brucato and Jackson, 4-3 over Ortiz. Sicotti got a shot at Bova with a 4-3 victory over Jackson in that quarterfinal match.

Bova eliminated Sicotti 7-3 for a second, and necessary third chance against Mirabelle in the hot seat. Bova took both sets of the true double elimination final 7-5 to become King of the Bar Box.

Grau downs Hatch family to win stop on Western New York Tour

Dave Grau went undefeated to win the July 1 stop on the Western New York Tour, and had to defeat an uncle (Mark Hatch) and his nephew (Dennis) to get it done. The event drew 14 entrants to Bison Billiards in Buffalo, NY.

The Hatches met twice; once in the first round, with nephew Dennis sending Uncle Mark to the loss side, and later, in the semifinals, where the result was reversed. Dennis moved among the winners' side final four to face tour director Nick Brucato. Grau, in the meantime, squared off against Corey Welfare. Dennis survived a double hill match against Brucato, and in the hot seat match, met up with Grau, who'd defeated Welfare 7-2. Grau sent Dennis to meet his uncle in the semifinals, and waited for a Hatch to return, one way or another.

On the loss side, Brucato picked up uncle Mark Hatch, who'd shut out both John Grant and Seth Pfudelus to reach him. Welfare drew Bobby Schrader, who'd gotten by Dan Miosi 5-3 and . Shawn McCluskey 5-2. Hatch and Schrader advanced to the quarterfinals; Hatch with a 6-3 victory over Brucato (first time in what Brucato described as "a long time" in numerous meetings between the two) and Schrader with a 5-3 victory over Welfare.

Hatch chalked up his third, loss-side shutout with a 6-0 victory over Schrader in the quarterfinals, and turned to exact some revenge on nephew Dennis. Dennis went down 8-2 and it was Uncle Mark that Grau had to face. Uncle Mark got served a taste of his own loss-side medicine, as Grau shut him out to secure the event victory.

"The Buffalo" Hunt wins Western New York Tour stop

Jason "The Buffalo" Hunt went undefeated on Saturday, April 14 to capture the Western New York Tour stop title. The 8-ball, bar table event, with races to 3 on the winners' side and 2 on the loss side, drew 19 entrants to The Diamond Bar & Grill on Lockport, NY.

Both the winners' side semifinals, and the hot seat match went 3-2 double hill. Hunt downed Chris Bassett, Mark Creamer sent Eddie Rosa, Jr. west, and Hunt gained the hot seat over Creamer.

On the loss side, two father/son combinations were working toward potential matchups. Rosa, Jr. moved over to face Willie Rhodes (son to Hank Rhodes), who'd defeated Bob Brott and Rick Sciotti, both 2-1. Bassett picked up Rosa, Sr., who'd advanced past tour director Nick Brucato 2-1 and spoiled a Rhodes family matchup by shutting out the elder Hank Rhodes. Rosa, Sr. did his part to secure a family quarterfinal by shutting out Bassett. Rosa, Jr., though, was shut out by the younger Rhodes (Willie).

Chalking up his third straight shutout, the elder Rosa defeated the younger Rhodes, and moved into the semifinals against Creamer. Rosa, Sr. gave up only a single rack in those semifinals and got a shot at "The Buffalo" Hunt. Hunt, though, did likewise, giving up only a single rack in a winner-breaks, race-to-6 final that ended around 4 a.m. and secured the event title.

Tour director Brucato extended thanks to Diamond Bar & Grill owner Tony Ciarfella and his staff, who provided players with free food - hot dogs, cheeseburgers and chicken wings - throughout the entire tournament.

Steele takes two out of the three against Brucato to win Western New York Tour stop

"To be 70 years young is sometimes far more cheerful and hopeful than to be 40 years old."  - Oliver Wendell Holmes

On Saturday, February 18, Don Steele, in his 70s, proved this point with a successful day on the Western New York Tour, defeating its 40-something tour director, Nick Brucato, twice, to claim the event title, at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. The $150-added event drew 21 entrants to Breaker's Billiards in Pittsburgh, PA.

From among the winners' side final four, Steele squared off against Richard Namie, as Brucato took on Al Landy. Steele got into the hot seat match with a 6-4 victory over Namie, as Brucato was busy surviving a double hill match against Landy. In their first of three, Steele and Brucato battled to double hill before Steele prevailed to sit in the hot seat, waiting for Brucato's return.

Namie moved to the loss bracket and picked up Nick St. James, who'd defeated Roger Jackson 6-3, and Paul Mottey 6-5. Landy drew Butch Weimer, who'd been sent to the loss side by Steele from among the final eight winners, and then defeated Smitty Smith 6-4, and Delbert Hall 6-3. Weimer made it three on the loss side in a row with a 6-3 victory over Landy, moving into the quarterfinals against Namie, who'd defeated St. James 6-4.

Weimer chalked up his final victory of the day, with a double hill win over Namie, and had his four-match, loss-side streak stopped by Brucato in the semifinals. Brucato got a second chance against Steele with a 6-3 victory over Weimer, and followed that up by allowing Steele only a single rack in the opening set of the true double elimination final.

In the second set, through the first six games, Brucato had once again given up only a single rack. On the hill now, Brucato watched Steele battle back to knot things at double hill, and then, with dawn approaching, complete his undefeated day to capture the event title.

Men do not quit playing because they grow old; they grow old because they quit playing - Oliver Wendell Holmes

Brucato, as tour director, thanked the ownership and staff of Breaker's Billiards, commenting that this most recent stop had been successful enough to warrant plans for future, regular stops on the Western New York Tour at this facility.

Manzi and Solve split top prizes on Western New York Tour

In a newly-renovated Premium Billiards in Syracuse, NY, Rick Manzi and Travis Solve (pronounced sol-vay) opted out of a second set in a true double elimination final and with one loss apiece on the day, chose to split the top two (and only) prizes. The $150-added event, held on Sunday, January 8, drew 10 entrants.

They met first in the battle for the hot seat, after Manzi had downed Thomas Bergen 5-4 and Solve had sent Dave Landon west 5-3. In the first of their two matches, Solve gained the hot seat with a 5-3 victory.

Over on the limited loss side, Roger Jackson and Kyle Racka were eliminated, leaving tour director Nick Brucato to face Mike Renshaw, and Jerry Sullivan squaring off against Dave Brobeck. Sullivan won a forfeit victory over Brobeck to pick up Landon, while Renshaw defeated Brucato 6-5 to draw Bergen.

It was Bergen and Landon advancing to the quarterfinals; Bergen with a 6-5 win over Renshaw, Landon with a 5-2 victory over Sullivan. Bergen then survived a double hill quarterfinal battle against Landon and then, was himself defeated in a double hill semifinal by Manzi.

Manzi evened his match score versus Solve with a 5-2 win in the opening set of what was to have been a true double elimination final. At that point, the two opted to forego a second set, leave their match score tied at 1-1 and split the top two prizes. Manzi earned a free entry to the tour's next stop, scheduled for January 15 at Six Pockets in Rochester, NY.

Duly impressed with the venue's recent renovations, and looking forward to scheduling further stops on the tour there, tour director Nick Brucato thanked  Premium Billiards owner Frank Wollack for his hospitality.
